This morning we got up nice and early to catch the cog railway up Pike's Peak, one of Colorado's 53 "Fourteeners", mountains with a peak elevation above 14,000 feet. From that height, you can see quite a long ways!
Pike's Peak is home to the sights that inspired the song America the Beautiful.
We rode this train up the mountain Out this direction is something like a 200-mile view clear across the rest of Colorado and into Kansas And out this direction is around another 100-mile view west The "timberline", so called because it's the point at which the ground never thaws and the wind gets strong and the air gets thin, so trees can't grow above this point on the mountain It was very, very cold at the peak. It never gets above freezing up here, and there's nothing to block the wind. We didn't stay outside very long :)
